12:47 am - First Post!

alizara
What's your name? I prefer to go by my LJ name online, so Alizara will be fine.

What clarinet(s) do you play/how long have you played them? B-flat only, I'm afraid. I tried bass once and I never could get enough air through it to make a sound. XD And I've been playing on and off more or less for 24 years now.

What's your favorite style of music to play? Classic and contemporary classic. Stravinsky is a big favorite. Jazz is also good.

Anything else? Nothing that I can think of at the moment, no. :)

12:39 am - Hello!

morgiemayy
What's your name?
Morgan Diane Mears.

What type of clarinet do you play & how long have you played it?
I play a Bb clarinet & I have been playing for almost seven years. I have no plans on stopping anytime soon either.

What is your favorite type of music to play?
I love to play marchs. I enjoy playing the marching music that we do at football games but for the most part I enjoy playing a Sousa march.

Anything else?
I love my clarinet, it is like my child. I plan on going to Rice University in Houston, Texas once I graduate high school and having a minor in Clarinet Performance. I made All Region Band, I only play class one solos & so far on all the solos I have played, I have recieved a rating of one on them, I recieved the Texas Music Scholar award this year. I play on a size 4 Vandoren reed.

2:58 pm - hola all. ;D

ohh_snapex3

What's your name?
My name is Mikayla, or you can call me Tay.
What clarinet(s) do you play/how long have you played them?
I play a Bb clarinet. I have played since 5th grade, and I am going to be entering 9th in the fall... so a little over 4 years, I think.
What's your favorite style of music to play?
I usually just play is given to me for marching or concert band, but some songs we have played that are my favorites are the classic rock song "Paint it Black" for our Homecoming and Memorial Day parades two years in a row and the "Mission Impossible" theme song for a concert we played this year.
Anything else?
Two of my High School band directors played for the DCI competition group the Cavaliers in their 2004 show "007," which was in first place, I believe, after the semifinals that year. I will be in my High School's marching band for the first time this year. The farthest away competition we will go to this year is in St. Louis. Our practices are like boot camp, I swear. I never thought marching band would require so much muscle and excercise, but it does. All the other students say that our band is one of the best around because we practice so much, which is true because in the summer, I will be practicing 2 times a day, 5 days a week. I guess that's all...! :D

What's your name? Sarah
What clarinet(s) do you play/how long have you played them? I play Bb clarinet, I've been playing for 6 years. It's a Buffet R13, and it is, my pride and joy. I played a bit of bass clarinet for a while, but that was just in year 7 for band (I'm now in year 11)
What's your favorite style of music to play? Classical. For sure. I prefer pieces from the Romantic period, but I'm not all that fussy. I also ADORE anything by Weber, especially his variations for Clarinet and piano, Var. 3. Mozart's clarinet concerto is (obviously) one of my favs. I do love a bit of jazz though, I've always loved Benny Goodman and I guess I always will
Anything else? I love love love love love the clarinet. I can't think of anything I love more then playing the clarinet (especially if it's raining). I use Purple Vandoren V12's (3.5) and a Yamaha clarinet cleaner. Important stuff.

What's your name? Brenda

What clarinet(s) do you play? Bb only. sadly. [ sigh ]

What do you most like to play? Pieces that have a flow or room for expression...which is basically every piece out there. D:
My favorite piece would probably be Adagio from Clarinet Concerto K.622 by Mozart.

Anything else? What is there? um, I've played for little under 3 years. I think I'm getting to pro status. xD jk.  Um, I really like that I can find people that share the same interest in clarinet as me. Because at my school it feels like not really many people care about the instrument they play. :[

What's your name? Haley. Call me Hales:)

What clarinet(s) do you play/how long have you played them? I play mainly B flat clarinet, but I play bass whenever my instructor asks me to. I play a Selmer Signet B flat all-wood clarinet. I've played since the sixth grade, now in eighth.

What's your favorite style of music to play?
I like up-beat, peppy songs of all sorts. I like to play swing actually. It would have to be my favorite.

Anything else? Um.. Well I've had a natural clarinet talent since I first picked one up, it's as if it's in my blood. My terribly old clarinet has been passed on since... forever, and when my mother passed it on to me I got the hang of it right away. Of course I always have to fix up the pads and my instructor has to tighten multiple of the little screws about once a week, but I refuse to get a new clarinet because mine is like my baby. And it's really expensive :O I keep it in a ratty old Selmer case that does nothing for it's actual beauty just so none of the delinquints at my school get any ideas about stealing it x33 I also play bass keyboard and guitar in my school's jazz band because my instructor doesn't have flute or clarinet in our jazz program... I love marching band. Tons. Sweat or no sweat. And I'm a total band geek at heart, by choice. ...So if you wanna know anything else, feel free to ask :)

What's your name? Jackie

What clarinet(s) do you play/how long have you played them? I started on a Bb clarinet in 5th grade then switched to the Bass Clarinet in 7th grade and have been mainly playing that since. It's a Buffet that my school is loaning to me and it's a wonderful instrument. I've been playing about 3 1/2 years, since we moved in the middle of my 5th grade year to a school that didn't have band. I just placed first chair in my High School on Bass Clarinet as a freshman. I'm interested in testing out an Alto Clarinet, just for fun

What's your favorite style of music to play? Well, classical is interesting, but I also enjoy Jazz music and anything with a dark sound such as a lot of music composed by Danny Elfman. I enjoy songs like those because of the heavy bass which I appreciate as a Bass Clarinet player :)

Anything else? I'm currently enrolled in Marching Band and start main training later today. I've been in District Honor band twice (3rd chair in 7th grade, and 1st chair in 8th), I auditioned for All-State but freaked at the auditions and didn't make it :( I want to be a professional musician/composer when I grow up

 What's your name? Rachel (Rachie)

What clarinet(s) do you play/how long have you played them? B-flat clarinet, 6th year. (tried base, failed miserably.)

What's your favorite style of music to play? Jazz, swing, contemporary and rock (mostly for pep band), and classical.

Anything else? I'm in marching band as well as pep, concert, and jazz band, and it's only my second year of marching because I was never in pit. I'm a sophmore in high school and i've been playing since the summer before 5th grade and joined marching band last year. This year's show features all classical pieces, except for the State Fair performance, in which we'll be playing the disco version of Beethoven's Fifth (Ugh) which is our "cheesy" part and we won't be using it in District or any invitational. Pep band is probably my favorite and 25 or 6 to 4 is my favorite pep band song. Um, I think that's about it. Oh, I didn't play my clarinet for half the year about a year and a half ago because i switched schools and I was afraid that I wouldn't be good enough to make it, but a few of my friends convinced me halfway through the year to join, otherwise I wouldn't be in marching band right now. Ok, I think THAT's about it. I love playing my clarinet!!!1!

What's your favorite style of music to play?
Classical is definatly my favorite.  I've been playing a lot of Weber lately.

Anything else?
I play about 5 other insrtuments besides clarinet, but clarinet is by far my favorite.

What's your name? Ashley (but you can call me Ash)

What clarinet(s) do you play/how long have you played them? B-flat, and am occasionally called upon to play E-flat alto. I own a Yamaha Custom as well as a plastic Selmer for marching or outdoor concerts, both in B-flat. Their names, respectively, are Lindy and Winston. I've been playing clarinet for nine years now.

What's your favorite style of music to play? Classical/Romantic, but I'm also partial Dixieland and jazz. I don't mind 20th century, but I hear enough of it in classes that I don't want to have to play it too.

Anything else? I'm a sophomore music education/clarinet performance major (or at least will be, come August). Band camp starts in 53 days!

What clarinet(s) do you play/how long have you played them?  I started on a plastic Bundy Bb soprano when I was in the sixth grade, picked up the Bass Clarinet in 8th grade and fell in love with it, then played the soprano during marching season and the bass during concert season all four years in High School.  Now I'm a freshman in college and I've just aquired a new Selmer CL 120 Bb Soprano (Of which I'm extremely proud).  I still play the Bass, too.  :)  I can't help it.

What's your favorite style of music to play? I'm currently in love with the music of Stephen Melillo.  I also love chamber music, as well as ballads and slow concert pieces that require musicality.  I don't like atonal music.  At all.

Anything else?  What else would you like to know?

Where (online or on the phone) do you by your sheet music?

I'm supposed to get (immediately, somehow, over labor day weekend)

The Clarinetist's Compendium -Bonade
Campione on Clarinet -Campione

Melodious and Progressive Studies Book I -Hite
Six studies in english Folk Song -Vaughn-Williams
16 Grand Solos -Bonade(editor)

And a Vandoren Optimum ligature, which I ordered.

I'm playing on a Buffet R13 with a Fobes Debut mouthpiece and Vandoren 4 reeds. (Should have V12, crap.) I'm a college freshman and NOT a music major. I feel out of my depth and depressed.

1:46 pm - Some questions.

vertareyes
I started playing clarinet in elementary school, and played throughout high school, and sometimes afterwards. It's been a while since I played, but want so much to pick it up again.

I have an old one, but it's pretty beat up. Are they easy to fix? Some of the cork is broken and it probably needs a lot of work. Is it worth it? Or should I just get a new one? I'm in Spain so they're probably more expensive out here, and I've no clue about repair.

I really want to listen to clarinet music. Any recommendations?

Also, does anyone know what bands José García (Jerry García's father) played in? I've always wanted to hear his music.
